You're used to using your normal rearview mirror while driving. Unfortunately, you won't use a towing mirror in the same way. So we have some tips on how to use towing mirrors when towing a travel trailer.

  1. Positioning: Make sure the mirrors are positioned correctly so that you can clearly see the sides and rear of the trailer. Adjust them so you can see the full width of the trailer, but don't see too much of it either.
  2. Pre-drive test: Before hitting the road, have someone stand behind the trailer and test your mirrors while you adjust them until you can see them clearly.
  3. Adjust as needed: While on the road, check your mirrors frequently and adjust as needed. Wind and vibration can cause them to shift.
  4. Use extended mirrors: Consider purchasing extended mirrors designed for towing, which offer a wider field of view than standard mirrors.
  5. Regular Maintenance: Keep the mirror clean and free of debris or any obstructions that may block your view.

Remember that good visibility is crucial when towing a travel trailer, and towing mirrors can quickly collect dust and grime as you typically drive your trailer into more remote rural settings and dirt roads. So make sure everything is clean so you have good visibility.

Also, when you're shopping for towing mirrors, you need to consider the size of your travel trailer. As a rule of thumb, you can generally assume that you need one inch of mirrors for every 10 feet of additional length in your vehicle. That means if you have a 50-foot trailer, you need a 5-inch mirror.

If you have a large travel trailer, longer side mirrors might worry you. In some cases, you may be concerned about scratching the mirror along the wall in a crowded situation. To avoid these situations, you should purchase mirrors that fold down to the side of your vehicle. That way you'll be able to weather the storm if you need to. Otherwise, there are some places you can't go when you have big mirrors.
