*Removal Guideline

Caution: Damage to the vehicle and air suspension system can be incurred if work is carried out in a manner other than specified in the instructions or in a different sequence.

1.To avoid the possibility of short circuits while working with electric components consult your owner's manual on how to disconnect your battery.

2.Consult your vehicle owner's manual, service manual, or car dealer for the correct jacking points on your vehicle and for additional care, safety and maintenance instructions. Under no circumstances should any work be completed underneath the vehicle if it is not adequately supported, as serious injuries and death can occur.

1.Set steering to straight ahead.

2.Raise vehicle.

3.Remove front wheel.

4.Remove air line fitting from the air valve. Remove the air line fitting from the air line and discard.(picture 1)

5.Remove the lower shock-mounting nut and bolt.(pictures 2,3)

6.Remove the ball joint nut from the spindle assembly and separate.(pictures 4,5)

7.Remove the sway bar end link to shock mounting bolt.(picture 6)

8.Disconnect the ride height sensor connector.(picture 7)

9.Lift hood and remove the three(3)mounting bolts that secure the air strut's upper mount. Remove plastic cover to gain access to the third bolt.(picture 8)

10.Remove strut assembly from the vehicle.(picture 9)

*Air Spring Disassembly/Assembly

1.Remove and discard the four bolts securing the air spring to the air spring upper mount.(picture 10)

2.Remove the top shock rod nut from the air spring. Remove and discard the old rubber rod end mount and the o-ring.(picture 11)

3.Remove the bottom of the dust boot from the shock.(picture 12)

4.Remove air spring assembly from the shock. Remove the lower shock o-ring and discard.(picture 13)

5.Install new shock o-ring,apply lubrication to the o-ring. Use caution when installing o-ring-if damaged, the air spring will not hold pressure.(picture 14)

6.Install the new air spring onto the shock.(picture 15)

7.Install the new o-ring and rubber rod end mount and nut onto the shock, tighten to manufacture's specification.(picture 16)

8.Align the air inlet with the shock forks(picture 17).

9.Install the new four bolts securing the air spring to the upper mount.(picture 18)

*Installation Guideline

Installation is in reverse order of air spring removal, with the exception of the Secured reservoir hose.

Adapter (T10157/1)

Air Suspension Strut Charger (VAS 6231)

Steel gas bottle filled with argon or corgon

Suspension struts (air suspension) are delivered as a replacement part with a minimum pressure. By sitting in storage for ended periods this pressure can diminish (just like a tire). Before the suspension strut (air suspension) is removed from its packaging, this minimum pressure must be controlled by refilling. If the suspension strut (air suspension) is removed from its packaging without this control/refilling, folds can occur in the under-filled air spring boot. These indentations lead to preliminary damage and may lead to premature failure.

1,Remove the cover from the packaging.

2,Remove union bolt-arrow-from the residual pressure holding valve.

3,Close the valve of the steel gas bottle.

4,Become familiar with the relevant rules for the prevention of accidents for pressurized containers and technical gases.

5,Connect the (VAS 6231) and (T10157/1) as shown in the illustration.

1.Suspension strut (air suspension) in packaging.

2.Steel gas bottle for argon, corgon with gauges.

3.Air suspension strut charger (VAS 6231)

4.Adapter (T10157/1)

Refilling the suspension strut (air suspension) may only be performed with the gases from the top to prevent any "uncleaned" air from getting into the air suspension system.

Set flow rate limiter gauge to 2.0 liters/min-arrow-.

Now fill gas in the suspension strut (air suspension) with several individual pressure bursts.

The display only shows a correct pressure if the back pressure of the residual pressure retaining valve is overcome. The back pressure is at approximately 3.5 bar. The air suspension strut is filled with enough gas when the pressure reaches 3.5 to 4.5 bar.

Make sure the pressure does not exceed 4.5 bar when filling.

Disconnect the (VAS 6231) from the (T10157/1). When doing this, gas will escape at a pressure greater than 3.5 bar.

Minimum pressure is now reestablished. Suspension strut (air suspension) can be removed from the packaging.

After installation, first drive the vehicle at high ride height and then at normal ride height. Repeat this sequence once more.

By moving the vehicle lever heights twice, the majority of the gas is exchanged with filtered air from the air supply motor.

Repeat same procedure for the front if in need.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to prevent the damage of air springs/How to extend the service life of air springs/struts etc.?

An air strut with separable air springs

If your vehicle offers a separable air suspension (Audi Allroad A6 C5, Mercedes-Benz W164, BMW X5, etc.), you should regularly (about once a week) lift the car to the maximum position, and remove dirt with a high-pressure cleaner (keep the cleaner at a distance to the air spring about 30 cm/12 inches, otherwise water pressure can damage the air spring). The highest position may vary depending on your model and regulation options. Therefore, please test this by trying the different modes available to you (Sport, comfort, dynamic, off-road) and choose the one that sets your vehicle to the highest position. The dirt will most likely be found under the fold of the pneumatic chambers. If you find a frozen layer of bitumen on the piston guide (the part of a strut on which the air spring is installed), it is recommended to clean it as well. Whenever possible, avoid riding on fresh asphalt, as fresh bitumen mixed with sand immediately results in a build-up of abrasives on the piston and in turn contributes to accelerated wear and tear of the air spring.

A complete air suspension shock

Many cars such as Mercedes W220 or W211 are set up with a complete air strut - shock absorber and air spring visually form a complete spare part. In many cases, you can easily recognize these by the metal cups with which the air spring is tightly mounted. To best avoid any damage, we highly recommend to regularly check the condition of the dust protection seals of the air strut.

What is the difference between an air spring and an air strut?

The air spring is a part of the air strut. Some vehicles (e.g. Mercedes ML) allow you to change the air spring separately. At our online shop you have the opportunity to buy either the whole air strut or only the air spring. For some type of vehicles it is not possible to change the air spring separately. In this case the whole air strut should be replaced.

Which side of my car is the Right and Left?

The right and left sides of an automobile are determined as if sitting in the car facing forward. Thus, the left side is on the left when sitting in the car facing forward, and the right side is on the right. For American cars, the driver’s side is on the left, and the passenger sits to the right of the driver. For cars in Japan, Britain, Ireland, the Bahamas and some other former British colonies -- where they drive on the left side of the road -- the passenger sits on the left side, and the driver (along with all the driving controls) is on the right.
