The engine oil pump is the heart of the engine-it pumps important lubricants and provides pressure for every moving part. The pump needs to provide 3 to 6 gallons of oil per minute while maintaining system pressure.

Most oil pumps are driven from camshafts or distributor shafts. The pump itself usually consists of two gears in a tightly fitting housing. When the gear teeth disengage, they leave a space filled with oil sucked in through the pump inlet. The oil then flows into the space between the gear teeth, where it is forced through the gear into the oil passage, creating pressure.

If your oil pump is not working properly, your engine will soon become an oversized paperweight. A failed pump can cause low oil pressure, lack of lubrication, and ultimately cause engine failure.

1. Plug the wheel with a wedge and set the emergency brake. Park the vehicle on level ground and set the emergency brake. Then put the wheel block behind the front wheel.

2. Jack up the vehicle and remove the wheels. Place the jack under the sturdy part of the frame.

If you have any questions about where to place the jack on a particular vehicle, please consult the service manual. After raising the vehicle into the air, place the jack bracket under the frame and lower the jack. Then completely remove the lug nut and remove the wheel.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

4. Drain the engine oil.

Remove the oil pump

1. Remove the oil pan. Remove the oil pan bolts, and then remove the oil pan.
On some vehicles, you need to remove other items before you can access the chassis, such as the starter motor, exhaust pipe, etc.

2. Remove the old oil pan gasket. If necessary, use a washer scraper, but be careful not to scratch or damage the oil pan.

3. Remove the oil pump. Remove the pump by loosening the pump to the rear bearing cap bolts and removing the pump and extension shaft.

Install the pump

1. Install the oil pump. When installing the pump, position the pump and drive shaft extension. Engage the drive shaft extension into the drive gear. Then install the pump to the rear bearing cap bolts and tighten them to specifications.

2. Install the oil pan. Clean the oil pan and install a new gasket.
Then, install the pan to the engine, install the bolts and tighten them according to the specifications.

3. Refuel the engine. Make sure that the oil drain plug is tightened and refill the engine with oil.

4. Remove the jack stand. Jack up the vehicle in the same position as before. Remove the jack stand and lower the vehicle.

5. Remove the wheel stopper.
